Missing and undetected device drivers

A missing device, warning icon, or failed peripheral does not automatically prove that a driver is absent. Power, cables, firmware settings, disabled devices, service failures, and hardware faults can look similar.

Preserve the exact error code and device identifiers before changing anything. Then use Windows Update or the computer and device manufacturer's official support information, making one reversible change at a time.

Diagnose a suspected driver problem

Common driver symptoms include a Device Manager warning icon, a device-status error, failure after an OS or driver change, crashes naming a driver, or a feature missing while the hardware is detected. Record what changed, the exact status code, hardware model, installed version, and Windows edition before attempting a fix.

Reconnect or reseat external hardware, restart, and run Windows Update. If the problem began immediately after an update, use Device Manager's rollback option when available or reinstall the known-working official package. PCI vendor/device codes and USB vendor/product codes help identify the component; ACPI identifiers often point to a model-specific chipset, hotkey, sensor, or power-management component.

Run Windows Update and inspect Optional updates, then search the exact computer or motherboard support page. Match the identifier and supported OS rather than downloading a package based only on a similar device name. If the device appeared after attaching a peripheral, disconnect it to confirm the relationship. When no supported package exists, leaving a nonessential device disabled is safer than forcing an unsigned driver; essential unsupported hardware may require a supported OS or replacement.

Restore missing speaker or headset audio

First select the intended output from Windows sound settings and check master, application, and hardware mute controls. Reconnect a USB headset, try a known-good port, and inspect analog plugs for the correct jack. HDMI/DisplayPort sound belongs to the display path, so choosing a monitor output can make built-in speakers seem silent.

Why are old devices shown after selecting Show hidden devices?

Windows can retain entries for hardware that is not currently connected. A hidden entry alone does not mean it is causing a problem.
