Fallback mode is a system's calm plan B. If a specific driver cannot start, the system can fall back to a basic translator so that a component still functions, even if not at its best. The full capability waits, but the part is not left idle.
This is what keeps a machine usable through trouble. The full capability may be temporarily out of reach, but nothing grinds to a halt. A reduced level of service is almost always better than none at all.
Fallback mode favours safety and dependability over polish. It uses simple, well-understood methods that are very likely to work, accepting fewer features in exchange for reliability when something has gone wrong.
It is meant to be a temporary resting place, not a permanent home. Once the proper driver is restored or repaired, the system can leave fallback behind and return to full capability, having kept things running steadily in the meantime.
In practice, fallback mode is like a spare tyre. It is not as good as the proper one and you would not drive on it forever, but it gets you safely on your way until you can fix the real thing. A computer keeps just such a dependable backup ready.
